What is a Pinewood Derby?

A bunch of fun! On race day it is a group of Arrowmen racing gravity powered wooden CARS of various shapes and colors rolling on plastic wheels down a 32' plywood track. But the actual competition is only a small part of it. The building of the car, from coming up with the design to applying the last coat of paint, is where the real fun starts. Each lodge gets a kit with a block of wood, four nails for axles, and four plastic wheels. Always keeping in mind the Cub Scout rules, they shape and paint their block of wood into a form to race down the track. This block of wood on wheels may end up looking like a car, a fish, a cartoon character, or even a coffin on wheels! Almost anything!

Who Can Race?

All NOAC registered Arrowmen (youth and adult) may enter the Goodman 500 pinewood derby. Stock and modified division trophies will be awarded to the fastest cars and for 'Best Paint', 'Most Unusual', and 'Best Looking' to give credit for creativity and effort. Each Arrowmen also receives a Drivers License.

How Do You Race?

The cars are gravity powered, and run down a track of two to eight (possibly more!) lanes. The track's start line is approximately 5' high, and the track slopes down to the floor and levels off for the final 16'. The cars are placed on the starting line, the judge pulls the starting device, and they are off, heading for the finish.
