The last full day of the Conference came with mixed
feelings. Some were relieved to almost go home, since they had lived an experience that
will last them a lifetime. Others wished the conference would last a lifetime so they
could easily continue the friendships they had made. We took a time of reflection on this
day to relive the recent past and the long history of the Order.
Today we look back at the founding of the Order of the Arrow as
Scouting’s National Honor Society. On July 14, 1915 E. Urner Goodman and Carrol A.
Edson carried out the first OA Ceremony at Treasure Island. Fifty years ago in
Bloomington, Indiana the first NOAC was held. Both these events marked the beginning of a
long history of tradition.
Following the final training sessions in morning, the afternoon
was filled with excitement as many lodges displayed booths with something from their
native area. This could be anything from sand to cheese to pamphlets. Most Arrowmen go
home with a bag full of goodies that will become lasting reminders of the day. During the
afternoon thousands of attendees enjoyed the pow wow. Founder’s Day ended with dinner
in the dorms and then to the theme show.
Incorporated into our main banner today is the silk screen
logo for Founder’s Day and a booth from the event. We also have a picture of a pow
wow dancer, and of Megan Weber, Miss Teenage America 1998. Finally E. Urner Goodman can be
seen looking into the distance, a "Vision of the Future".
The theme show titled the "The Admonition" focused on
some very tough events in life. The house from the pre-show to the finale was rocking to
say the least. It was an excellent show to end the day with.
After the show ice cream was served, fireworks went off, and an
excellent band played. The night ended on a lively note that will be remembered forever.
