The Fun Continues during Evening Recreation

After a long day of training and meeting new friends, how better to strengthen the new ties of brotherhood than with some good old-fashioned team sports! Check out the activities that will be available for the Sunday night recreation time:

4-Way Soccer: In this hectic version of traditional soccer, two fields are set up at 90-degree angles to each other. There are four goals, at each end of both fields, with the center circle an equal distance away from each goal. The game is played with teams of four, and while a team can choose to play with a goalie, he cannot use his hands. Not one, but two soccer balls are placed in the center circle to begin the game and after each goal. Teams start at their goal and run to the balls when the whistle is blown. Games go for 20 minutes, followed by a 5 minute tiebreaker among all tied teams. If the game is still tied after 5 minutes, it ends in a tie.

Teams are able to score on any goal except for their own. No player may use their hands, and fouls will be called on any player who is caught slide tackling or pushing. Players who foul are penalized for 5 minutes. If a ball goes out of bounds, the player closest to the ball who is not on the team who last touched the ball is able to throw the ball in. If the ball goes out on either side of the goal, and the team whose goal it is was closest to the ball, that team can execute a goal kick. If needed, teams may sub after a goal before play resumes.

Fowling: This unique yard game is a combination of bowling and football. Two sets of bowling pins are set up in the normal formation 32-48 feet apart, facing each other. The game is played in teams of two, and each team stands next to their formation. Teams play rock-paper-scissors to begin the game, and the winner can either choose to go first or choose a side to defend. Teams then take turns rolling or throwing the footballs at the opposing team’s pins. The first team to knock over all of the pins wins the match. Matches are played best out of three, and teams switch sides between matches.

Each team will get at least one turn during a match – if the first team to go knocks down all of the pins, the other team has one chance to do the same. If teams tie in a match, one pin is replaced in a spot determined by the defending team, and teams alternate to knock down the single pin. In this sudden death, he first team to knock down the pin wins, regardless of if the other team has thrown or not. Pins must completely fall over to be out – leaning pins are still in play! Only one person may throw at a time, and players must stand behind their pins when throwing. Both team members must throw their football before the next team may go.

4-way soccer is available SUNDAY NIGHT ONLY at Walnut Grove during the 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. free time. Fowling will be available during the same times at the corner of 17th and Fee and will also be available on Monday night.
